Episode 16

What would you do if your body was crushed and splintered, and your back was fried, after being slammed from your racing wheelchair by a truck?

Would you be able to recover and continue training to race in a marathon in Japan?

Do you think that seven years later you could organize and endure a challenge to race in 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 weeks?

My guest could and did. He’s Paul Erway from Shelbyville, Kentucky.

Twenty-six years before colliding with that truck he was paralyzed from the chest down in an automobile wreck.

We talk about those accidents and the five levels of grief.

We’ll also learn how to “get back on your horse” after a life-altering event, and how he wrote two books about his marathon challenge.

The books are titled 50 Abilities / Unlimited Possibilities / Wheeling Through 50 States from Jackson to the Boston Marathon Bombing and 50 Abilities / Unlimited Possibilities / Racing to the Final Finish Line from Salt Lake City to the Mountains of Montana.

Join our conversation as he gives us the opening couple minutes of a keynote talk he provides around the country titled “Get Back On Your Horse.”

Then we’ll get into what happened and how it has taught Paul that “the more people you can help the more you will be blessed.”

We’ll close with the amazing work his employer, Superior Van & Mobility does with their adaptive equipment.

Paul has worked with them for twenty-two years, bringing their life-changing products to disabled people.

We recorded this podcast in the conference room at their location in Lexington, Kentucky.
